Abstract (EN): De facto States: Invisible Islands on the Political Map. This article focuses on de facto states – entities that function and behave as independent countries but lack international recognition. The authors define a de facto state and then discuss causes for the emergence of such states (e.g. nationalism or politics) and factors enabling them to survive in the long term (e.g. geopolitics or economy). The arguments are supported by evidence from all eleven entities that currently correspond to the definition of a de facto state.
